1940s and 1950s ranch houses in the flats, many expanded with second stories, and larger hillside homes south of Ventura with long attic and crawlspace duct runs. That mix decides what we find in attics, crawlspaces and flues, and it is why one street can need a different approach from the next.

For chimneys, the common issue is fireplaces that survived a remodel as decor while the chimney above the ceiling was never inspected again. For dryer vents, it is second-story additions that moved the laundry upstairs and sent the dryer vent through a long attic run to a roof cap. Behind all of it: the Valley heat that pushes summer temperatures past 100°F, plus freeway dust from the 405 and 101 interchange.

Additions are the common thread. When a second story goes on a ranch house, the original ducts usually stay in place downstairs and a new system is added above, so the house ends up with two units of very different ages. We clean both, but we also tell you which one is doing more of the work.

Proximity to the 405 and 101 shows up on the filters. Homes within a few blocks of the freeways load a filter with fine black dust faster than homes further away, and those houses benefit from a better filter as much as from a cleaning.
